David Goin Obituary

David Wayne Goin, aged 69, passed away in his home in the early hours of May 9, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born on October 2, 1955 in Denver, Colorado, David was the youngest of four sons to the late Carol Dawton and Mary Jane (Nickeson) Goin. David had a meaningful bond with his father, and looked up to him with deep admiration and love, remembering him for his kindness, and crediting him for his inherited quiet wisdom, and a love of working with his hands.

David was raised by his parents in Denver, but remembers most fondly the childhood summers he spent at his grandfather’s farm in Roger Mills, Oklahoma, catching frogs with his brothers, and “getting up to no good.”

Throughout his teen years, David enjoyed sports, and was a dedicated athlete, beginning in football, then in diving, following his brother, Dan, and finally in men’s gymnastics. In competitive diving, he was most proud of his three meter dives, and in gymnastics, he enjoyed the men’s ring event. He never missed watching the Olympics after his athletic days had passed.

In 1978, David graduated from Denver University with a bachelor’s degree in business, and worked his way through various jobs, including construction, Target communications, and being a Frito-Lay driver for over 10 years until he was able to open his candy distributing business, Goin Distributing, in 1996, with routes all over the southern part of Colorado and down into New Mexico. He enjoyed thoroughly spoiling his children with the excess candy from his business. He spoke often and fondly of the beauty and the peace of his drives, and until the day of his passing, he could tell you how to get to any destination without a map.

David was married twice throughout his life, which bore from those the lives of five children, Jolene, Justin, Joshua, Jacob, and Jordan. In 1987 he settled in Pueblo West and made it his home of over 35 years, proudly being one of its first 5,000 residents.

With his youngest children, David began a routine of Survivor Pizza Night, and he loved taking long evening walks around the neighborhood, with the kids in a wagon, and the family dog, Pepper, in tow. His favorite parts of fatherhood were teaching his children to ride a bike, and giving them the coming of age ride in the family tractor.

He was known throughout his life for his mild manners, dry humor, and his quiet strength. A true homebody once retired, David enjoyed coffee in the mornings, a good Western on TV, a Pepsi with ice, a Pyramid cigarette, and a project. He was a jack-of-all trades, always fixing, tinkering, or building something, and his home was a reflection of his care and craftsmanship, where he curated what his children refer to as his “southwest gift shop.” In his older years, David had an unexpected love for cats, and became the unofficial, “cat lady of the neighborhood”, and in his time, fed and fostered over a hundred cats, with some being long haulers, and others, just visitors.

In his final years with us, David enjoyed the care and company of his family, feeding a semi-feral cat he named, “Fatboy”, binging the best and latest TV shows, and watching Jeopardy, where he would consistently answer the questions that none of the contestants knew.

He is remembered very lovingly by his children, and eight grandchildren. He is also remembered with affection by his former wife and longtime friend, Therese Goin (Lilley), who cared for him in his final months and with whom he remained close. Finally, David leaves behind his three older brothers, Richard Goin (Lynn), of Peyton, Dale Goin (Sally), of Denver, and Dan Goin (Lupi), of Denver, all of who lovingly referred to him as their,”Davey.”

David was our oddball, and he will be missed thoroughly and dearly. His voice had a cadence that was unique to him, and his laugh will be dearly missed. We hope to hear it in the wind through gentle spring breezes and to see him in our dreams. We will feel him in the smell of brewing coffee, the sound of a lighting cigarette, and the, ”tick-tick” of Sixty MInutes.

We’ll see you later, Alligator
