Dr. Matthew Philson Obituary

Dr. Matthew Allen Philson, 38, died peacefully at his home in Pueblo, CO on Sept. 15, 2025 following a year-long battle with brain cancer.

Affectionately known as “Matt”, he was born June 19, 1987 in Pueblo to Jan and Greg Philson. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Kenneth Max and MaryAnn Philson; and his maternal grandparents, Weldon and Cecile Hurst.

He attended Trinity Lutheran Grade School and Centennial High School where he had many friends, played basketball, ran track and cross country. He went on to the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, where he studied chemistry, biology, sustainable environment, and photography. He completed his formal education at Creighton University School of Dentistry in Omaha, Nebraska.

Matt returned to Pueblo and started his dental career in 2014. His Dental Practice was never just about teeth; He took great pleasure in serving people. He developed a bond with everyone he met. His mission was to provide excellent care with compassion, warmth, and respect to all. His care of people also reached into the community. He volunteered with a Veterans organization called “Healing Waters” in which he was able to minister to men by teaching and sharing his love of fly fishing and tying flies.

He loved all things outdoors, including backpacking, golf, fly fishing, raising chickens, and gardening. Matt was an amazing husband and Dad. He loved spending time with his wife of 9 years and his two children, Olive and Benjamin. They enjoyed planting flowers and trees, harvesting food from their garden, planning meals and cooking together. He was intelligent, down-to-earth, humble, and had a beautiful smile. Matt wanted his children to appreciate and enjoy the simple things in life and not take anything for granted. He treasured his family.

Matt was a member of New Life Bible Church. His faith was in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was baptized in the Arkansas River in Pueblo, CO in September of 1998.

Matt leaves to cherish his memory; his loving wife Kim (Roskam) Philson; his children, Olive Philson and Ben Philson; his parents, Dr. Greg and Jan Philson; brother, Brad (Lacey) Philson; many family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Matt will be deeply missed, but forever in our hearts. Although we might ask why, we know God is always faithful and we continue to trust in the Lord and obey.
