Elvira Agnes Esquibel
July 12, 1941 – April 27, 2025
Elvira "Vera" Agnes Esquibel, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother and proud member of the Salt Creek community, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Born on July 12, 1941, in Pueblo, Colorado, Vera was a beacon of warmth, generosity, and unwavering family devotion.
A proud graduate of Central High School’s Class of 1959, Vera went on to attend Colorado State University Pueblo in 1960. Throughout her life, she remained deeply involved in her community as a member of the Cameo Club and the Salt Creek Mother's Club. She retired from a fulfilling career as a banker, known not only for her professionalism but for her caring nature and integrity.
Vera was the cherished daughter of Baldomero and Elvira Hernandez. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Lloyd Esquibel, and their beloved children, Lloyd Louis and Melissa Esquibel. She is survived by her loving daughter Bernadette (Gregory) Tennant, who was her pride and joy.
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Elaine, Sylvia, Nikki, Daniel, Kyle, Mark, and Michelle; her 14 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her endless happiness.
Vera’s family roots ran deep. She was raised by two remarkable women—her paternal grandmother, Dona Bernarda Velasquez, and great-grandmother, Manuelita Mejia—whose strength and wisdom shaped her into the nurturing woman she became.
She was one of 18 siblings and faced immense sorrow in burying 14 brothers and 2 sisters. She is survived by her beloved brother Frank Hernandez and dear sisters-in-law Stella, Emilia, Jessie and Reynalda.
Those who knew Vera will remember her kitchen always filled with the scent of delicious food, her home with the sound of laughter, and her heart always open to others. Her greatest joy was cooking, entertaining, and bringing family and friends together—especially on Christmas Eve, when her home was a haven of warmth and tradition as family and friends gathered year after year at her table for her famous homemade menudo and fresh tamales. Her home always welcomed everyone.
A lifelong fan of the Denver Broncos and the Nuggets, Vera was as passionate about her teams as she was about her roots. She took great pride in being from Salt Creek and represented her community with honor and heart.
A very special thank you to Jennifer Guevara, her devoted caregiver and honorary family member, who lovingly cared for Vera for seven years. The family is forever grateful for the kindness and love she gave.
Vera’s presence was a gift to all who knew her. Vera took pride in being called Aunt and Grandma to many. Her laughter, generosity, and fierce love will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Recitation of the holy rosary honoring Vera will be held Thursday, May 8th at 6:00 p.m. and a celebration of Vera’s life will be held on Friday, May 9th at 10:00 a.m. both at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Interment services to follow at Roselawn Cemetery.
All are welcome to join in honoring the life of a truly extraordinary woman.
