Jay A. Bevsek, affectionately known as “Jaybird”, 72, passed away April 28, 2025. He was a lifetime resident of Walsenburg, Colorado. He was born September 27, 1952 to proud parents, Harry and Rosemarie (Lisac) Bevsek. Both precede him in death along with his sisters, Sherry Montoya and Bonnie Bevsek.
Jay was a quick wit that was known for his sarcastic humor and imitations. He attended St. Mary Elementary and graduated from St. Mary High School in 1970. In his younger years he worked at CF&I and retired with 28 years from the U.S. Postal Service, then he worked at Kay's liquor. His favorite thing to do every morning was read the Pueblo Chieftain and the Huerfano World Journal on Thursdays while in the bathroom. Jay absolutely loved sports. He lettered in basketball and baseball in high school, played competitive fastpitch and slowpitch softball for many years, and was an avid golfer who loved playing in the league with his younger brother Randy. He was a very good softball umpire in Walsenburg for many years during and after his playing days. JBird was also an excellent bowler who was proud of being the highest average bowler multiple years and winning team championships with his teammates. Lastly, he was known to shoot a nasty stick of pool when he was younger. Jay was a huge sports fan, he loved baseball, basketball, football, and golf. His favorite teams were the Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, Cleveland Indians as a child, the Denver Nuggets, Boston Celtics, and of course the Denver Broncos. He had season tickets in the 90s and drove to New Orleans to attend Super Bowl XXIV to watch the Broncos vs. the 49ers with his wife Deborah and his brother Chuck and sister-in-law Carol. He was a beacon of light to anyone he came in contact with, everyone was a friend and he had absolutely no enemies. Jay had the best memory, he could remember every family member and friends’ birthdays, addresses and who you were related to. He loved to share his life stories, lessons, and love with his family and friends.
Jay is survived by his wife of 47 years, Deborah (Giro) Bevsek; children, D.J. Bevsek, Reginald Bevsek and Robert “Bobby” Bevsek; siblings, Chuck (Carol) Bevsek, Marilyn Bevsek and Randy (Sylvia) Bevsek; In-law, John Giro; brother-in-law, Don Montoya; special aunt, Carol Glorioso; several nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends who loved and will miss him dearly.
Funeral Mass, 10 am, Sat., May 31, 2025 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 121 E. 7th St., Walsenburg, CO. 81089
