Jody Johnston-Duran Obituary

On Saturday, 24 Feb 2024, Jody Kathleen Johnston-Duran left this world to join her Mom and Dad.

Jody is survived by her husband of nearly 31 years, Michael Duran, and her daughter, Hannah-Jayne Duran.  Jody is also survived by her brothers Steve (Laura) Johnston and John Johnston.

Jody was proceeded in death by her mother and father, Jane and Everett Johnston.

Jody was born in Portland, Oregon on April 1st, 1961. An April Fools Baby. So, you could never pull an April Fools Joke on her. “That is the Rule!” (or so She claimed).

She is of Scottish and Irish heritage. She celebrated this heritage by being a Scottish Highland Dancer from a young age. At times, practicing as her brother played the bagpipes.

She attended James Madison High School in Portland OR, participating on the Dance Team, in Theater and in the Choir. She graduated in 1979, and then went on to attend the University of Oregon where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Painting and a Master of Arts (MA) in Architecture.

While at the University, she also studied Japanese, which she was able to speak and write fluently. She was able to capitalize this talent by landing a job in Japan teaching English to Japanese businessmen and students.

There, in Japan, that she met “her sailor boy” and, although she did not know it at the time, her future husband. It was at a club in Downtown Tokyo, a New Years Eve party to ring in 1990. Unknown to both Jody and Michael, this was actually a blind date. Jody was told there were going to be several sailors at the party. “You’re telling me I will be dancing with a lot of men taller than me?”. It turned out there was only one. The rest is history. “I had to travel halfway around the world to find my Colorado Desert Boy”

Jody and Michael were married March 20, 1993, in Portland OR. A year later Hannah-Jayne was born. There are many more stories, both good and bad, that could be told about Jody’s life but that is for another time.

Through the intervening years, Jody has worked at several positions where she was able to use her education, talents, creativity and passion. Most notably teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at Littleton High School and ELS Educational Center, Denver, and teaching Art for Notre Dame Catholic School (K-8) in the Archdiocese of Denver.

Throughout her life, Jody was continually expressing her creativity and artistic talents. She was a painter, (including oils and pastels, although watercolors were her favorite medium), quilter, seamstress, and jewelry creator and designer.

Jody always seemed to make people laugh and smile. For that she will be missed by friends and family alike.
