Leo "Viejo" "Dad" Mascarenas Obituary

Leo Robert Mascarenas Sr., 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 27, 2025. He was born on August 8, 1935, in Boone, CO, to Melacias ‘Max’ Mascarenas and Serafina (Chavez) Mascarenas, who preceded him in death, along with his brother Jesse Mascarenas and sister Wilma Rivera. He was also predeceased by his in-laws, Charles F. Trujillo Sr. and Epifania (Serria) Trujillo.

Leo grew up in Boone and would frequently visit the next town over, Avondale, where he eventually met his wife and soulmate Ercy Mascarenas.

Leo worked at the Pueblo Army Depot and retired from there with 30 years of service. Leo called Avondale home for many years and was a faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he participated in the annual Jamaica and could be seen helping out at the pull-tab booth with his family. He was a proud member of the Pueblo Charro Association and enjoyed a variety of activities, including horseback riding, coaching his daughters’ soft baseball teams, and attending his grandkids’ and great grandkids’ sporting events.

Leo also had a talent for woodworking and often found solace while working in his yard. He was a loving and caring man who deeply valued his family. Leo, affectionately known as Viejo, Dad, or Pompo, was a shining light in the lives of all who knew him. His journey was marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by him. Leo conducted his life with honesty and integrity. He possessed strong values and was liked by everyone due to his positive energy, infectious sense of humor and easy-going nature. Leo had incredible patience and always made time to help others. His legacy will endure within us forever, reminding us that our attitudes are within our control. We choose to live a life of meaningful acts of love and service, following Christ’s example.

Leo is survived and deeply missed by his beloved wife of 69 years, Ursinia “Ercy” (Trujillo) Mascarenas, and their children: Mark Mascarenas, Greg (Jennifer) Mascarenas, Stephanie Mascarenas, Barbara (Michael Sr.) Soto, Leo Mascarenas Jr, Paula Mascarenas (Angela Villalovas), Conrad Mascarenas (Ryan Davis), Sara (Brian) Bugna, and Martha (Ted) Martinez.

His memory will continue to inspire his 12 grandchildren: Katie Mascarenas, Marty Mascarenas (Julianne Totten), Nick Mascarenas, Loren Mascarenas, Brandon Mascarenas Sr., Michelle Soto (Shane Spry), Michael Jr. (Aja) Soto, Jared (Ashley) Soto, Dezerae Bravo, Ko Bugna, Violet Bugna, Lily Bugna and his 15 Great Grandchildren: Brandon Jr. Mascarenas, Bryan Mascarenas, Isabella Soto, Michael “Trip” III Soto, Gavin Soto, Ava Soto, Jericho Soto, Ema Soto, Mya Soto, Emileo Olivas, Jaydon Olivas, Zyanya Soto, Jared Jr. Soto, Joaquin Soto, Azarius Bravo.

He was actively engaged in the lives of his grandchildren, taking the time to teach them important life skills and offer guidance, while also showing care, affection and laughter. He enjoyed spending time with each and everyone of them.

His memory lives on with his In-laws on his Wife’s side; Charles F. Jr. Trujillo, Richard Trujillo, Patricia (Marshall) Boatman, Isabel (Benny) Casias, Joesph (Mary)Trujillo, Saul (Florence) Trujillo, Elenor (Robert) Montoya, Fred (Rita)Trujillo.

Leo will be deeply missed by numerous other relatives and friends. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. They deeply appreciate your prayers, kind thoughts, and the generosity shown through the food and flowers.

A Celebration of his life will commence with a Rosary at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Sacred Heart Church, Avondale. Followed by Mass of Christian Burial Interment, St. Vrain Cemetery.
