Lupe Garcia Obituary

Guadalupe D. Garcia

December 19, 1937 – April 28, 2026

Guadalupe “Lupe” Dolores Garcia, 88, of Pueblo, CO, passed away April 28, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born December 19, 1937, in Pueblo, Colorado as the fourth child and second daughter of George and Dolores (nee Montelongo) Solorzano. Throughout her life, Lupe lived in close proximity to her large extended family in Bessemer, celebrating church festivities, attending softball tournaments, family weddings, and family holiday gatherings.  Lupe attended Central High School and married Robert Atencio in 1955.  They had three children: Dolores, Robert Jr., and Arthur.  Lupe worked at St. Mary–Corwin Hospital from 1959 to 1969 and later served the State of Colorado at Pueblo Community College.  In 1969 she married Pedro Garcia Sr., and they had two children: Pedro Jr. and Laura. Lupe retired in 1999 after 30 years of dedicated service. In retirement, she continued to give her time to others by volunteering at St. Mary–Corwin Hospital and working in the Pueblo School District lunchroom, where she was affectionately recognized with the “If You’re Happy and You Know It” Award.

Lupe was preceded in death by her paternal grandmoter, Clara Solorzano, maternal grandparents, Domingo and Celestina Montelongo, parents George and Dolores Solorzano, her cherished son, Arthur Atencio (1980) and her beloved husband, Pedro Garcia Sr. (2011). Other family members who predeceased her include brother John Solorzano, sister Petra (Larry) Lucero, sister-in-law Mary Solorzano, brother-in-law David Delarosa and nephew Michael Solorzano.  Lupe was cherished by her remaining siblings, who survive her:  Daniel Solorzano (Pueblo), George and Loretta Solorzano (Denver), Carmen Delarosa (Groves, Texas) and Tom Solorzano (Port Neches, Texas). They enjoyed a close-knit relationship, traveling and laughing together while keeping alive the traditions and memories of their parents and those who passed before them.

Lupe is lovingly remembered by her children, all of Denver: Dolores Atencio (Alfredo Peña), Robert Atencio Jr. (Erma), Pedro Garcia Jr. (Eunette), and Laura Garcia.  She was Grandmother to seven grandchildren who never will forget her unique personality, and life lessons which were delivered with great humor:  Christina Atencio, Maria Atencio, Simone (Jorge) Atencio-Ramos, Mariesa (Bryan) Terrones-Garcia, Gabriella Terrones-Garcia, Elena Terrones-Garcia, and Andres Terrones-Garcia.  “Grandma Lupe” and her Pueblo home during the Colorado State Fair will remain among the earliest fondest memories of her seven great-grandchildren: Jason Atencio-Fuentes, Aaron Atencio-Fuentes, Jorge Julian Atencio-Ramos, Matais Garcia, Bella Atencio-Essig, Lilia Ramos, and Evayah Garcia.  Lupe also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, the extended Montelongo and Solorzano families, as well as dear friends.

The saying goes, the primary job of a parent is to ensure their children have a better life.  Through her sacrifices and hard work, Lupe was successful in providing that to her children.  She instilled in them the gifts of a profound pride in their Mexican American heritage, love of their family and the value of hard work and an education.
