With great sadness, we announce the passing of Maria Del Refugio De La Rosa Alvarado, affectionately known as “Cuca,” who left us on July 29, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on December 14, 1944, in San Julian, Jalisco, Mexico, Maria was the beloved daughter of Tomas and Norberta (Moreno) De La Rosa.
Maria was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Florencio Alvarado, with whom she built a loving and blessed family. She is survived by her sons, Mark A. Alvarado and Jaime R. (Kate) Alvarado; daughter, Dr. Sylvia M. (Joseph Kelly) Alvarado; sister, Celia (Richard) Alvarado; brother, Lupe (Linda) De La Rosa; and six cherished grandchildren, Caden Alvarado, Benjamin Alvarado, Beckett Alvarado, Anabel Alvarado, Joseph Alvarado-Kelly, and Aela Alvarado-Kelly.
Maria’s life was a testament to her passions: her deep love for family, her exceptional musical talent, her culinary skills, and her green thumb. Acclaimed for her beautiful voice, Maria’s singing enriched every family gathering and community event. She was a devout Catholic, praying the rosary daily and actively participating in church activities. Her tamales and green chili were celebrated at festivals held at Our Lady of Assumption, and her inventive cooking continued to delight those around her.
Her garden, particularly her majestic rose collection, was a local treasure, often admired and enjoyed by many in Bessemer.
A Rosary will be held at 9:30 am, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at St. Mary's Help of Christians Church, 307 E. Mesa Ave., Pueblo, CO 81006. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery.
The family kindly requests donations be made to the Maria De La Rosa Alvarado Memorial Education Fund, organized by Kate Alvarado (https://gofund.me/5b07893c), to honor Maria’s lifelong passion for education and her enduring legacy.
