Melissa Marie Heglund, 67, passed away on January 16, 2026, at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs. She was a woman of unmistakable presence who lived a life of bold colors and complex shadows.
For most of her life, Melissa wore who she was like a billboard. She was a fierce, unapologetic member of the LGBTQ+ community, and she used her signature color pink as a banner for her identity. She didn't subscribe to anyone else's standards of beauty; instead, she took great pride in her own—loving to have her hair, makeup, and nails done as part of her vibrant, "what you see is what you get" presentation. She was a larger-than-life figure who was straightforward, kind in her own way, and entirely herself.
The final two years of Melissa’s life were a tragic departure from the woman she had been. Her long-standing battle with mental health was complicated by addiction, a struggle that eventually left her a shell of her former self. After she stopped taking her necessary medications, the toll on her body and mind led to a massive stroke.
While her end was marked by these deep hardships, those who loved her choose to remember the grit she showed throughout her career as a construction estimator and the fiery spirit she possessed before the darkness of the last two years took hold. She is now at peace, reunited with her mother Emily Jane and her son Matthew, and finally free from the battles that defined her final days.
