“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18
Praxeres Nicholas Montoya went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday March 5th, 2025, at the age of 67. He went on to glory surrounded by all his children, grandchildren, wife, sister and brother-in-law.
Praxeres was born September 16th,1957 to Eloisa and Nicholas Montoya in the San Luis Valley. In his youth he was affectionately known as “Praxi”. Praxi was the beloved youngest son in a family of 12 children. He was doted on by his parents and siblings alike. Praxi always had genuine joy and zest for life. In his adolescence that appetite for life was most apparent in his love of muscle cars, rock ‘n roll and football. It was in his teenage years that he met the love of his life and future wife, Vonnie Chacon.
In his young adult life Praxeres became affectionately known as “Pando” to those who knew him well. Pando and Vonnie raised five wonderful children in Salt Lake City, Utah. Pando was a hard-working provider. He made a lifelong career as a tire technician. In his spare time, he coached his children’s sports teams. His door was always open to those in need, taking in friends and loved ones over the years. He is considered a surrogate father to many, and his legacy of love and acceptance is apparent in the lives of countless individuals.
In adulthood, Praxeres became known as “Nick”. Nick and Vonnie moved to Pueblo, Colorado in the year 2000. It was in Pueblo that they saw their family grow to include five sons and daughters-in-law, nineteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren with two more on the way. Nick’s family has always been the most important thing in his life. He was a loving and dedicated father, grampo, son and brother. Nick was truly one of a kind and he was nothing if not consistent. So much so that any one of his children or grandchildren could guess, with near perfect accuracy, what was in his pockets at any given time. He was an excellent teacher and relished the opportunity to impart his wisdom and knowledge to his family. Whether it be working on your car or making homemade beans, Nick taught you the long way but the right way to do something. He never cut corners even when it took five hours to cut the veggies for ceviche. Nick’s football commentary is the stuff of legend. In recent years he graduated from Captain Obvious to Admiral Obvious with epic one liner’s like “The Broncos could win more games if they scored more points.” Speaking of the Broncos, Nick was an avid Denver Broncos fan up until the end. Nick was a man of few words, so when he spoke up you listened. He didn’t interject often but when he did it was important, and he always gave sound advice. Whether you knew him as Praxi, Pando, or Nick, or if you were fortunate to know him in every era, you were undoubtedly impacted by him. And if you were blessed to have been loved by him, your life has been forever changed for the good.
Nick is survived by his wife, Vonnie Chacon. His children Cilatli Taylor (Bryan Sandoval), Keith Martinez, Natalia (John) Cebulski, Jacob (Nancy) Montoya, Isaac (Jennifer) Montoya. His grandchildren Michael Martinez, Cesar Montoya, Elicia Montoya, Deontay Martinez, Mekhi Montoya, Lily Montoya, Abbigail Montoya, Julian Montoya, Tayton Montoya, Ace Martinez, Belle Montoya, Cruceficio Taylor, Evangeline Montoya, Tonantzin Taylor, Sofie Montoya, Kloee Martinez, Liviya Montoya, Fiorella Montoya. His great grandchildren Zuraiah Montoya, Ezrah Montoya, Mateo Martinez, Milo Martinez, Zaelynn Lynch, Gabriella Montoya. His Siblings Mary Martinez, Amar (Vangie) Romero, Steve Romero, Darlene (Sam) Ruybal, Denise Montoya, Celeste (Bryan) Salazar.
Nick is preceded in death by his parents Nicholas and Eloisa Montoya. His siblings Alex Romero, Alfonso Romero, Albert Romero, Vivian Montoya, Natalie Montoya.
