Susan Diane (Cafferty) Crockenberg

   Sue was raised in Binghamton, New York. She is survived by her husband Dave, daughters Jenny (Albert) and Andi and Son Michael (Candice). She is also survived by her treasured grandchildren Xavier, Dominic, Atlas, Karter and newborn Mina Rose. She is predeceased by her parents Robert and Doris Cafferty, and her brothers David and Dennis. She is survived by her brother Brian. Also, loved as a daughter by Dave’s parents, Rose and Walt Crockenberg.

   Sue attended Binghamton North High School graduating in 1966. She loved North High. She was involved in many activities at North, including Cheerleading, National Honor Society and the student newspaper. She was Homecoming Queen in 1965. Sue and Dave first met at North High. They married in 1971.

   She went to college at Oneonta State Teachers College, now SUNY Oneonta, graduating in 1970. She majored in Home Economics. She also attended Merrill Palmer Institute in Detroit for a semester.

   Following college, Sue moved to Chinle, Arizona to start her teaching career at Chinle High School. Prior to moving to Chinle, she had never been west of Pennsylvania. She taught Home Economics, was the cheerleading coach and embraced her Navajo students and the Navajo Culture. It was the defining time of her life.

   Sue was a teacher and a supporter of people and causes she loved. She started the Teenage Parenting Class at Central High School that provided child care and education to young women so they could finish their education and become employed. She was active in the AIDS cause. She made a quilt in honor of her brother David and took it to Washington, D.C. on October 11, 1987, where it was displayed at the National Mall during the National March on Washington. She organized the 1 st World Aids Day Vigil in Pueblo on December 1, 1989. She served two terms on Governor Roy Romer’s AIDS Council. She also served many other causes she believed in.

   She was never afraid of a new adventure. She loved hiking, kayaking and was great at scuba diving.

   The family would like to give thanks to the doctors and nurses at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital, Penrose Hospital and Sangre de Cristo Community Care for the care and support provided to Sue and our family.

   Sue will live in our hearts forever.
